Explore Sachsenhausen, the large Concentration Camp at on the outskirts of Berlin. Though the camp was huge, tours typically focus on the prison camp, where you will explore the interior of the camp grounds and see the external SS training camp where Kommandant Hoss from Auschwitz was trained. The memorial is a 50 minute train ride through the delightful forests of the northern suburbs of Berlin. Upon arrival at Sachsenhausen, you begin to explore the history of the camp on an emotional tour. Enter at Tower A and stand on the registration compound, then moving on to see the Jewish Barracks, gallows, boot testing track, industrial yard, Station Z killing center, East German memorial, gas chamber, then finally you will visit the hospital and pathology building. You will be guided by an expert on the camp history who will tell you of the horrible existence inside the prison and of the labourers who were forced to build it just as the eyes of the world were diverted by the Olympic Games in 1936. You will also learn how the camp was kept in use by both the Soviets and East Germans after the Soviet liberation in 1945.
